Chapter Two: A Whisker Away
Back in their rooms, Lily, Sam, Maya, and Jack tried their best to act like nothing unusual had happened. Lily pretended to be engrossed in a book about faraway lands with shimmering deserts and talking parrots. Sam quietly sharpened his colored pencils, his eyes flicking towards the door every now and then. Maya and Jack busied themselves with a half-finished game of checkers, but their moves were a little too quick and their smiles a little too forced. It’s funny how grown-ups sometimes think they’re the only ones who can tell when something’s up!
Later that afternoon, as they were supposed to be having quiet reading time, Maya, who was always the most likely to speak her mind, leaned over to the others. “Did you see that little flash of light, just under the door?” she whispered, her eyes bright with curiosity.
