The moon was a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream in the sky, sprinkling the world with its gentle, silvery light. Max, our favorite nine-year-old inventor, was wide awake in his treehouse lab. But he wasn’t tinkering with wires or beakers tonight. Instead, he was gazing out the window with a look of pure wonder.

Tonight was the night of the Whispering Stars.

Every hundred years, according to an old legend, the stars would gather close enough to Earth to whisper secrets to those who listened with their hearts. Max had been waiting for this night for as long as he could remember.

He had even invented a special listening device: the Star-Whisperer 6000. It looked like a giant seashell with a tangle of wires and a pair of super-sensitive earmuffs.

His friends, Lily, Tom, and Maya, had come to the treehouse for the occasion, all bundled in cozy blankets and filled with excitement.
