The school year was just about to begin, and everyone was buzzing with excitement. New notebooks, freshly sharpened pencils, and the promise of seeing all their friends again filled the air. Georgia was especially excited because she loved learning new things and spending time with her pals, Leo, Maya, and Sam.
One sunny afternoon, Georgia was walking to Maya’s house. Maya was usually the first one out the door, her bright smile shining like the sun. But today, the porch was empty. Georgia gently knocked, and the door creaked open slowly. There was Maya, sitting on the floor, looking very glum.
“What’s wrong, Maya?” Georgia asked softly, her perceptive eyes noticing the little frown on Maya’s face and the way her shoulders slumped.
Maya looked up, and Georgia could see a little shimmer of tears in her eyes. She wiggled her toes, and Georgia’s gaze followed to her feet. Maya was wearing her sneaker…
